This image is actually from a vidpro card that was used to display Super Mario Bros. 3 on the store floor while the actual merchandise was kept locked away to prevent theft. I doubt this image was ever intended to be used as the final art; it seems more likely that the makers of the vidpro card needed an image to use before the game was actually released and came up with this.
